SOHO(SmallOfficeHomeOffice)的头一个字母的拼写，意思为小型家庭办公.起源于美国80年代中后期，然后迅速风靡全球经济发达地区。1998年,美国“在家办公SOHO一族”为840万，但市场分析家普遍认可的数字是2100万-3000万，占美国劳动力市场的40%左右。造成这两个数字差异的原因是，美国劳工局未能把大量存在的即受雇于某家公司又在家里办公的SOHO族计算在内。在中国，国内特别是大中城市已拥有相当一部分中青年追“新”族们加入SOHO的世界。一个人疯狂不等于大家都妄想狂。现在有40％的美国劳动力是受雇于自己。他们大多具备如下特点：有经营头脑，趋利性、良好的组织性、有文化、有雄心壮志、有事业心，多面手。仅上海的在家办公SOHO一族就有70万。在北京，“在家办公SOHO一族”已经超过100万。特别是去年春天的“非典”更加速了“在家办公SOHO一族”的飞速发展。
