to my own experience, if you wanna correct your accent and make it native, there are three things you should focus on.
firstly, you should correct your pronunciation in letters,from A-Z. That sounds quite easy, but that's always a kind of work at which we are actually not really good enough. however, the effective way in doing this is get a tape or mp3 file and which was recorded by native speakers, and pronounce every alphabetical letters. you should keep on listening to it, imitating it, prictising it. in this way, after a week, your pronunciation in letters will be quite good like native speakers.
secondly, work on your pronunciation in single word. after you can pronounce in a correct way, you should focus on your pronunciation in single word. first of all, you should learn the certain rules in pronouce word from english grammar book. after mastering this, you should do the same thing like before, listening and imitating the correct speaking of single word from tapes or mp3 files. this usually will take you maybe a month to do it well.
lastly, maybe the hardest part, practise the correct speaking of whole sentences. as you can pronounce the letters and words correct, the further step is practising the speaking of whole sentences. it needs more efforts from you. first, you should learn the rules, like intonations, the tones, and even the body language. you can get that from grammar books and english speaking guiding books. second, you should listen and imitatethe speaking of sentences actively from tapes, English news(like BBC/VOA), soap operas and movies,etc. by the way, you should speak loudly and frequently. And if it's possible, try to communicate with foreign friends. that will be quite helpful in improving your english speaking.
all in all, i believe that "practice makes perfect". so if you can do the things correctly and efficiently, maybe in a year or a half, your speaking skills and accents will quite native. let's do it together!

hmmmm.i always ask myself if that's real important or not? if,so.there are too much accents ,which one should we follow?chinese ppl usually think indian accent is so different from others.but have u ever asked yourself?why they can still communicate well with other native english speakers?one chinese teach who's teaching economics in canada.i beg u will find some mistakes on grammar and pronunciation from her words.but she can still communicate well with native english speakers.and her class was praised by most her students.even in american itself .they have still some different accent between north and south.which one is more correct,can u tell?they are all native english speakers.how can u say this one is uncorrect.i can give u some examples.i am from shanghai,of coz i speak both wu dialect and mandarin.i speak mandarin since i was little.but if i go to beijing.they can easily identify my accent is different from local even i speak mandarin.but who can say i don't speak mandarin?who can tell my mandarin is uncorrect?
in my own opinion.u can try to follow one accent which is the best on your mind.if u have some foreign frineds ,that would be more helpful.many chinese ppl would probably say that's still limited to have foreign frineds.nothing is impossible .didn't u know u can find anything in the net?of coz,that's include of frineds.if u can find or not,that's just based on if u tried or not. www.shanghaiist.com is the website which is service for making friends with ppl who's all over the world.u can not only find your frineds,but also find your language teacher.it's hard for pplself to correct the pronunciation,because u have already used the way u speaking.just similar to my mandarin which is mixed little shanghai dialect.so the bext way to find a native english speaker who helps u to correct your pronunciation.that would be more useful.of coz.if the one is interested in your culture and your language.that would be perfect.u can enchange language with him.. -
Agree with Cattie. The most important part of learning a new language is to be able to communicate. The focus should be on how to put up a sentence in a way the native speakers can understand. However, if you have a better pronunciation, you would definitely sound better educated...:)!
